Let’s Talk About the Pelvic Floor (And How to Not Pee Your Pants) https://burnbootcamp.com/lets-talk-about-the-pelvic-floor-and-how-to-not-pee-your-pants/ Wed, 13 Mar 2024 16:00:59 +0000 https://burnbootcamp.com/?p=2788526 WE’RE SO GLAD YOU (AND YOUR PELVIS) ARE HERE!

Pelvic floor health plays a pivotal role in overall fitness and well-being, serving as the foundation for core stability and functional movement. Whether it’s lifting weights, running, or performing everyday tasks, strong pelvic floor muscles are essential for maintaining proper posture, balance, and alignment during physical activities. Neglecting pelvic floor health can lead to a range of issues, including urinary incontinence and pelvic pain. By prioritizing pelvic floor health through targeted exercises and proper education, you can enhance your overall fitness level, reduce the risk of injury, and feel more confident.

WHAT’S A PELVIC FLOOR ANYWAY?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that are located at the base of the pelvis. There are three main layers to the pelvic floor. The bottom layer of the pelvic floor aids in sexual function, while the remaining two layers hold and support your organs, including your bladder, uterus, and rectum. The other role of the pelvic floor muscles is to control the release of fluid. They contract during activities like walking or exercising to maintain continence, and in contrast, relax when you go to the bathroom. On top of this, the pelvic floor works with your diaphragm to expand and recoil when you breathe. Remember, they’re just muscles. We want them to contract and relax, just like our biceps when doing weighted bicep curls.

We’ve partnered with Dr. Amanda Fisher, PT, DPT, in a new Burn On Demand series called Core & Pelvic Floor to help you feel and perform your best, both in and out of Camp. Amanda is the Founder and CEO of Empower Your Pelvis, a physical therapy clinic in Lee’s Summit, Missouri that specializes in prenatal and postpartum pelvic floor therapy and the education on pelvic floor dysfunction. Watch the Core & Pelvic Floor intro video to learn more about what the pelvic floor is all about, and how you can strengthen it without doing kegels.

PRIORITIZE PELVIC FLOOR HEALTH

Strong pelvic floor muscles provide essential support to the spine, pelvis, and internal organs during dynamic movements, helping to maintain proper alignment and stability. This function is especially important for optimizing athletic performance and reducing the risk of injury. A healthy pelvic floor contributes to improved balance, coordination, and power transfer through the body.

For women, the importance of pelvic floor health is particularly emphasized during pregnancy and postpartum. Throughout pregnancy, the pelvic floor undergoes significant changes, making it essential to strengthen and support these muscles to prevent issues such as urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Similarly, postpartum pelvic floor rehabilitation is crucial for restoring muscle tone and function, addressing any pelvic floor weaknesses or dysfunction resulting from childbirth. By prioritizing pelvic floor health, you can enhance your overall fitness, athletic performance, and quality of life both during and after pregnancy.

WHY AM I PEEING MY PANTS?

When the pelvic floor muscles become weakened or impaired is when you may start to experience some problems. Do you have to take a bathroom break every time you get to the Double Unders station at Camp? If the answer is yes, you could be experiencing one of the common pelvic floor dysfunctions – urinary incontinence. We want you to get as many reps as possible without having to run to the bathroom or check your leggings during Camp. If you experience this, talk to your Trainer to adjust your form or mod-down to take some of the pressure off your pelvic floor.

Additionally, pelvic pain disorders, including pelvic floor muscle spasms or tension, can cause pain and discomfort. If you’re experiencing this, it might be time to prioritize your pelvic floor.

Addressing these common pelvic floor dysfunction issues may not be as difficult as you think. Pelvic floor exercises are a great step to take in strengthening your pelvic floor and minimizing the symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction.

CORE… MEET PELVIC FLOOR

The pelvic floor muscles form the core of the body. A strong and coordinated core helps maintain proper alignment and posture, facilitates efficient movement patterns, and reduces the risk of injury during physical activities. The pelvic floor muscles play a crucial role in core function by providing foundational support and stability to the pelvis and spine. Weakness or dysfunction in the pelvic floor can compromise core strength and stability, leading to issues such as lower back pain, pelvic instability, and incontinence. Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles alongside the other core muscles is essential for optimizing overall core strength, stability, and function.

WORKING YOUR CORE & PELVIC FLOOR

Whether you can get through a full set of star jumps without needing a bathroom break or not, incorporating pelvic floor exercises into your workout routine is essential for promoting pelvic floor health and maintaining proper form and posture in Camp.

Dr. Amanda Fisher, PT, DPT, breaks down the exercises and techniques you can do to strengthen your core and pelvic floor during each day of our protocol. She gives strategy for jumping during athletic conditioning, how to use your breath to support your pelvic floor on leg days, and even essential things you can do for your pelvic floor in every Camp, regardless of the protocol.

The complete Core & Pelvic Floor series with Amanda available on the Burn Boot Camp app with Burn On Demand today. Start your Burn On Demand 7-day free trial or subscribe to Burn On Demand and start prioritizing your pelvic floor health.

AMANDA’S TOP 3 MISTAKES WHILE LIFTING

Dr. Amanda Fisher, PT, DPT, has outlined some of the biggest mistakes she sees when people are lifting. Whether you’re lifting weights on the Floating Floor or cleaning up around your home, there are ways you can improve your form to better support your core and pelvic floor.

Holding Our Breath: “The first is breath holding. When we go to stand or pick up something heavy, oftentimes we hold our breath and grunt as we do it. This pushes pressure down into our abdomen and pelvic floor as we move which can cause bladder leakage or pelvic heaviness. Instead, exhale as you move to lift pressure up from the pelvic floor. For example, as you stand from a chair – exhale. If you pick up a box or a kid from the ground – exhale. When you lift plates overhead to the cabinet – exhale. This is the easiest way to incorporate good patterns and health for our pelvic floor!”

Arching Our Back: “The second thing I see happen is that we tend to shove our pelvis in front of our hips and arch our back when we stand up from a chair or from lifting something off the ground. This can contribute to back tightness, bladder leakage, and pelvic heaviness. My tip for correcting this is to think about stacking your ribs over your pelvis when you stand up from a lift.”

Tucking Our Pelvis: “The third thing is that we tend to tuck our pelvis under and round our back as we lift something from the floor. This places most of the work on our back and doesn’t allow our glutes to do the work for us. Instead, when you bend to pick something up off the floor, think about hinging your hips back as if shutting the car door with your butt.”

Scott Tobin’s Journey to Multi-Unit Franchise Partner https://burnbootcamp.com/scott-tobins-journey-to-multi-unit-franchise-partner/ Fri, 08 Mar 2024 15:07:20 +0000 https://burnbootcamp.com/?p=2788549 Picture this: Eighteen years ago, Scott Tobin kicked off his fitness journey as a personal trainer, driven by this intense fire to make a positive impact through health and wellness. His journey was just getting started because fast forward to eight years ago, Scott found himself in Raleigh, North Carolina, joining the Burn Boot Camp crew. That move was a game-changer for Scott.

Scott dove headfirst into the Burn Boot Camp culture, bringing with him incredible talent and a commitment that just wouldn’t quit. He wasn’t just there to clock in and clock out; he was on a mission. From day one, he was committed to inspiring, empowering, and shaking things up with fresh ideas.

His role in growing the Raleigh location from the ground up was nothing short of remarkable. He knew how to motivate, how to innovate, and how to turn mistakes into valuable lessons. Talk about a true leader in action!

Scott leveled up to become a Franchise Partner with Burn Boot Camp but didn’t stop there… He scaled the philosophies and practices that had proven successful at a local level, and currently, he oversees operations across 12 locations.

Scott Tobin shares, “Now that I’m a Franchise Partner, I’ve transferred the energy I put into Members to taking care of my employees as best as I can,” he says. “I am an advocate of top-down management and believe it starts with me and trickles down. If your employees are happy, they’ll bring that energy, excitement and passion to the Members.”

Tobin’s advice to others who want to own a Burn Boot Camp is to focus on passion, resilience and the willingness to learn and adapt.

“Choosing the right franchise is crucial,” he says. “We often seek perfection, but reality is filled with imperfections, errors and challenges, especially when a business is growing rapidly. These growing pains are real, but the beauty is in growing together, facing issues both as a franchise and at the headquarters level.”

Couple Goals: Building Strength at Burn Boot Camp https://burnbootcamp.com/couple-goals-building-strength-at-burn-boot-camp/ Fri, 02 Feb 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://burnbootcamp.com/?p=2788408 Before trying Burn Boot Camp, Vince would often ask his wife, Chantel, to workout with him at his gym. “He’s always wanted me to work out with him. It was like pulling teeth to get me to go with him,” she recalled. Vince would create programs and routines for her to follow, but whether it was not having the weight training foundation, or the exercises simply not aligning with her goals, Chantel felt like their time at the gym just wasn’t working.

This all changed when one of their friends, who was also a Burn Boot Camp Trainer, invited them to try a Camp that she was leading. Vince and Chantel both quickly fell in love with the style of Camp and how they could do the same workout, but always feel challenged even though they were at different places in their fitness journey. Chantel mentions enjoying the ability to adjust the exercise to fit the level she’s at, “Coming to Burn, it’s been easier because we’re all doing the same things and we’re able to exert our energy in the ways that we both want to.”

Central to Chantel and Vince’s Burn experience is the power of community, a theme that echoes in every workout and interaction. Beyond the physical and mental transformations, it’s the friendships and accountability within Burn Boot Camp that keeps the couple committed. “The community’s huge. It’s so unexpected to have found actual friends at the gym. It’s not just about getting your workout done and leaving. It’s a big part of why we continue to come,” Vince said about the relationships he’s made throughout his time at Burn.

The impact of Burn ripples into Chantel and Vince’s personal lives, influencing their approach to nutrition and fostering deep connections. Burn Boot Camp emerges as more than a gym; it’s a transformative community where Chantel and Vince found people to not only push and challenge them, but also be there for support.

Read our full interview with Chantel and Vince below to learn more about their story and the impact that Burn Boot Camp has had on their connection as a couple.

What is it like being able to work out together?

Chantel: Originally before we came to Burn, we didn’t do a good job together because we workout so differently. Coming to Burn, it’s been easier because we’re all doing the same things and we’re able to exert our energy in the ways that we both want to. We’re both able to individually push ourselves because I just can never match what he’s doing. He’s on a whole different level, so it’s nice to be able to come here to workout. Sometimes we’re partners, sometimes we’re not. But either way, at the end of the day, we just got a good workout and we’re both happy and then we leave feeling better.

Vince: Previously, I would always try to program her workout. Whether it was not having that foundational lifting experience or not aligning with her goals from a workout perspective, it wasn’t working. For Burn, we can both come into Camp, and I know I’m probably going to mod-up if there’s an option to mod-up, because I feel pushed in that sense. And I know for her, which has benefited us well, is she can push herself in the way she wants. Not in the way that I think I should be pushing her.

Chantel: Also, having the Trainers at Burn is great. I can explain to them where I’m at, where I feel like I need to be pushed or where I’m like lacking a little bit and they can help me. Now I can mod up in ways that I can, or I can just take the workout as it is.

What is something that surprised you about Burn Boot Camp?

Vince: For me, the benefit that was unexpected after coming to Burn Boot Camp has been my overall athleticism. I grew up playing sports and I played college lacrosse, and the one thing that I missed was having that athletic foundation. There’s been an overall improvement in my athleticism and my body feels healthy and great.

Chantel: I think the community is a big one for me just because you can go to any kind of gym and leave, and you don’t have a bunch of people hanging out and talking. Meeting people and becoming friends with them has been surprising. I wasn’t expecting it. Also, the different types of workouts and learning to love those challenging workouts. Just that growth.

Vince: The community’s huge. It’s so unexpected to have found actual friends at the gym. It’s not just about getting your workout done and leaving. It’s just a big part of why we continue to come.

Chantel: I love it when you’re in it and it’s a really tough day, and then you’re able to high five someone else that’s struggling, or you see someone who’s maybe struggling more than you and you give them a high five. It’s nice to bring each other up because we’re all at different levels, regardless of our athleticism. I think friendships, pushing each other, and celebrating each other’s successes have been another level.

Vince: We consistently come to the 6:30 AM Camp, so we have the same people for the most part that go to that workout. Everyone’s progression is motivating personally, and I think as a group setting too.

How has Burn Boot Camp brought you closer together?

Chantel: I think the gym has always been one of those things that’s very much Vince’s playing field. He’s always wanted me to work out with him, but during our workouts before I was like, “I’m not doing that.” It was like pulling teeth to get me to go with him. When we started coming here, it was different because of the community, and because the workouts are always different, and they keep you interested. I think that really helps. And I think it’s cool to see each other grow.

Vince: Yeah, it is. Also, I would say with the community, we come to the gym and leave the gym together, but we’ve also found comfort in the fact that we can have partners each day that are different, and we’re not always partners. That is cool too, because it adds another layer to the community aspect and the ability to be together, but also separate.

What are some things you’ve been able to achieve because of Burn Boot Camp?

Chantel: I personally had some fitness goals that I’ve achieved here that I wasn’t sure if I ever would. I’ve always had an imbalance in strengths in my legs. Outside of Burn, I’ve also been doing physical therapy. This was the starting point for me to really take it seriously for the first time. Through Burn and through physical therapy, I’ve been able to finally start to equal out that imbalance. The first time I was able to step up on a box jump, I remember finally being like, “Oh my gosh, I did it!” That was really cool. That was a multi-year challenge that I was finally able to accomplish.

Vince: It’s a great feeling to have completed a Camp. For me, whether it’s a 6:30 AM workout or if we happen to sleep in a little bit and go to an afternoon Camp, it just sets you up for having an awesome day because you’ve eaten the frog first thing in the morning and now you can take on the day with whatever other challenges come your way. At the end of the day, if you’ve had a not so hot day and you push through that mental barrier of having to show up to the gym and then you go crush a workout that is super hard, especially on a cardio day, you feel like, “Okay, I can rest easy knowing that maybe the day didn’t go totally as planned, but I got this workout in and I can take pride in that.”

Chantel: I think it feels really, really good. When you’re in it, it’s really, really hard and obviously it feels bad, but then once you’re finished, you have that final breath of just like, “Okay, we did that.” You’re catching up from it and it feels so good. The rest of your day is just going to be easy from there and you already did the hard thing. You feel good about yourself, you feel like you’ve been challenged, and then now you get to have an easy day from there on. And also, it feels good for your body. You’re just happy on all sorts of levels.

What sets Burn Boot Camp’s Trainers apart?

Chantel: There are a few things. Our Trainers come up to you and kind of force you to keep going and push you past where you think you can go. And then, looking around and seeing people of all ages, sizes, experiences. That is where you look over and you’re like, “There’s no way I should stop now.” You’re inspired by other people, so that kind of keeps you going. Sometimes you have tougher days and you’re like, “I don’t know if I can,” but being able to see other people in your Camp that you’ve seen starting from point A and they’re now at point Z is really cool. It’s like another push to keep you going.

Vince: It’s been awesome to have Trainers that give you one-on-one attention in that group setting. I’ve been to other group fitness classes or gyms where a lot of people just don’t have that foundational training, and it could increase the potential of someone getting hurt. That was one thing I was not so much worried about with Chantel, but one thing I was kind of aware of is that I wanted her to feel comfortable doing the exercises. With Gabby, Leslie, Lindsay, Hannah, and all our other Trainers, they really do make it a point with Chantel or other people that may not have that foundation of being in a group class or with the exercises that we do, to correct form and to keep an eye out with certain people. Even personally, just hearing my name get called out in Camp, I’m like, “Oh man, I’ve got to turn the burners on and get after it.” It gives that element of a coach type feel. Which again, it just feels more so like I’m training for a sport or training for something rather than just showing up and doing a workout. It’s honestly been one of the biggest motivators for me coming to Burn.

Chantel: With the Trainers, they don’t only feel like coaches. They also take Camps with us sometimes, so they feel just part of it with us. Sometimes they’re next to you, sometimes you’re with them, which is way harder because their levels are insane. Sometimes they’re training us, and, like Vince said, they’re calling your name out, they’re modding you up because they know you can, but maybe you don’t know you can, and they’re coming up to you or calling on you from across the room. Regardless, they’re keeping an eye on the room and making sure that you’re doing things right. It also feels like a little bit like a friendship, too. It just full circles a little bit with them.

What is your favorite thing about Burn Boot Camp?

Chantel: I would have to honestly say that my favorite thing about Burn is the community because it keeps me coming back and keeps me honest.

Vince: That’s my favorite thing, too. Community. It’s so unexpected to have met people that we now hang out with outside of the gym. The conversation isn’t even about the gym when we’re here or when we’re hanging out. It’s not just a surface-level relationship, either. We’ve been able to gain deep friendships from the gym, which is kind of crazy.

Chantel: I feel like there’s never a time where we’re not keeping each other accountable, like saying, “We’ll see you tomorrow, right?”

What’s your favorite Protocol?

Chantel: I like a few Protocols, but I would say that right now my favorite is core and conditioning. Recently, surprisingly to me, speed and agility has become a favorite.

Vince: My favorite would have to be metabolic conditioning. I just like the functional hybrid of strength and conditioning, but speed and agility, that’s awesome.

How has Burn Boot Camp affected your personal life?

Chantel: I think nutrition is a big one. Burn has affected my nutrition awareness, especially because I’ll have those Focus Meetings with Gabby or Leslie, and we’ll just talk through some of those goals. They’ve kind of opened windows to understanding nutrition in a different way than I had before. But again, we also like to hang out with them, too. So, hanging out with people outside of the gym is also another effect that we’ve had.

Vince: Yeah! And to add to that nutrition piece, Chantel’s super disciplined and I definitely follow her example with nutrition because it’s something we’re both interested in. Going back to the familial aspect of being at the gym together, I think it’s certainly motivated us both to be more aware of what we’re putting into our bodies and how it’s affecting performance when we come to the gym. I have to give her a big kudos for setting the standard with the nutrition piece because that’s been huge for us, just really getting into the details of that nutrition.

What would you tell someone who is interested in trying Burn Boot Camp?

Chantel: If somebody was interested in coming to Burn Boot Camp who hadn’t been, I would tell them to expect it to be very hard, but it’s also an opportunity to push yourself in a way that you probably haven’t. Also, do not let it bring you down if you’re looking around and you’re overwhelmed by other people’s performance. Just zero in on yourself, listen to your body, do what you can, and don’t feel bad about what you can’t because that’s just going to give you a starting point. Over time, you’ll reach those goals, and then you’ll feel proud of yourself at the end of it. So don’t let yourself get in your own way – would be the main one.

Vince: For me, if I was going to give advice to someone to join Burn, I think measuring the expectations is important, like Chantel said, but also knowing that you’re coming into a community where there’s no judgment. That is huge. You don’t have to play this comparison game because of what you alluded to earlier. Everyone is in all shapes and sizes, all different ability levels, and has different goals. So, take your time. I don’t think there’s a time period that you have to try to commit to, because again, that’s going to be different for everyone as well. It’s just a matter of taking it slow and understanding that the results won’t be immediate, but if you’re consistent, then they’ll come. I think we both can attest to that coming here. We’ve been coming consistently and committing to it, and measuring our expectations has helped.

What does “two claps” mean to you?

Vince: It’s part of this practice or collective experience. We’ve opened the workout with a warmup and we’re all like, “Oh my gosh, here we go.” And then the two claps for me just means we all did this together at different speeds, different ability levels, but we’re closing out this day’s workout together because we all made it through.

Chantel: Yeah, pretty much. I feel like it’s about teamwork. You don’t normally end a class like that with anybody, like any other place that I’ve ever been to. You just end it, and everybody just goes their own way. But I think having the two claps, one sounds great, and it feels like a celebration, but also it feels like teamwork. Like we did it together.

The Importance of a Protein-Packed Day  https://burnbootcamp.com/the-importance-of-a-protein-packed-day/ Mon, 15 Jan 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://burnbootcamp.com/?p=2788357 It’s time to take a moment for the unsung hero of your fitness journey – protein. Whether you’ve been a Burn Boot Camp Member for years or you’re getting ready to take your first Camp, understanding and prioritizing your protein intake is key to unlocking your full potential. Protein acts as the building block for lean muscle mass, aiding in the repair of micro-tears that occur during exercise and weight training. This not only contributes to enhanced strength and endurance, but also plays a pivotal role in working towards your fitness goals. We recognize the crucial importance of incorporating an ample amount of protein into your routine to maximize the benefits of your workouts

But First, Protein

Starting a meal with protein can serve as a strategic approach to meal planning and portion control. By focusing on protein initially, you ensure that this essential nutrient is a priority in your overall dietary intake, helping to balance macronutrients and promote a well-rounded diet. Protein-rich foods have a significant impact on feeling full and satisfied. Starting a meal with protein can help control appetite, reducing the likelihood of overeating during the meal.

Including protein at the beginning of a meal can also help stabilize blood sugar levels. Protein slows down the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, preventing rapid spikes in blood glucose. This is particularly important for individuals with diabetes or those aiming to maintain steady energy levels throughout the day.

Building Muscle with Protein

Fueling your body with protein after a workout is not just a recommendation, it’s a strategic move towards optimizing your fitness goals. Protein plays several key roles in the muscle-building process:

Amino Acid Supply: Proteins are made up of amino acids, which are the building blocks of muscle tissue. There are essential amino acids that the body cannot produce on its own and must be obtained through diet. Consuming protein-rich foods ensures a sufficient supply of these essential amino acids, facilitating muscle protein synthesis.

Recovery and Repair: Intense exercise, especially resistance training, can cause microscopic damage to muscle fibers. Protein is instrumental in repairing this damage and promoting the regeneration of muscle tissue. This process is essential for muscle growth and adaptation to increased training loads.

Nitrogen Balance: Proteins contain nitrogen, and maintaining a positive nitrogen balance is crucial for muscle growth. When the body is in a positive nitrogen balance, it indicates that there is an adequate supply of amino acids for protein synthesis, promoting muscle growth. Conversely, a negative nitrogen balance may lead to muscle loss.

Hormonal Regulation: Protein intake influences the release of hormones involved in muscle growth, such as insulin and growth hormone. These hormones play a role in nutrient transport to muscle cells and the stimulation of muscle protein synthesis.

Replenishing Glycogen: A protein-rich post-workout meal or snack helps replenish glycogen stores, restoring energy levels and aiding in the prevention of muscle breakdown. This, in turn, contributes to increased strength and improved performance over time.

Preservation of Lean Muscle Mass: During periods of calorie restriction, there is a risk of losing both fat and muscle mass. Consuming enough protein helps preserve lean muscle tissue, ensuring that most weight lost comes from fat rather than valuable muscle mass.

Combining protein intake with a well-balanced diet, sufficient calorie intake, and proper strength training exercises creates an environment conducive to muscle growth and overall fitness. Incorporating a balance of protein-rich foods into your diet, such as lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, legumes, and plant-based sources like tofu and quinoa, can be an effective strategy to support your goals while maintaining overall health and muscle integrity.

One of our favorite post-Camp protein recommendations is a scoop of Afterburn Protein in your Burn shaker with milk, or blended into a smoothie. We also love Afterburn Bars for an on-the-go bite that’ll leave you satisfied with 17 grams of protein and packed with other amazing ingredients, like Collagen.

Getting Enough Protein in A Day

Consuming at least 100 grams of protein in a day holds various benefits for overall health and fitness. Meeting this protein threshold is particularly crucial for those who are working out often or pursuing fitness goals. Adequate protein intake supports muscle protein synthesis, facilitating muscle repair and growth, which is essential for those participating in strength training or endurance exercises. Additionally, protein plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy metabolism and aiding in the preservation of lean muscle mass. Beyond its structural functions, protein contributes to the synthesis of enzymes, hormones, and immune system components, enhancing the body’s overall resilience. Striving for a daily intake of at least 100 grams of protein ensures that your nutritional needs are met, promoting optimal health, fitness, and a well-rounded diet.

Tips For Incorporating Protein

Start Your Day Right: Begin your morning with a protein-packed breakfast. Include foods like eggs, Greek yogurt, or a protein smoothie made with Afterburn Protein Powder to kickstart your metabolism and keep you energized throughout the day.

Snack Smart: Opt for protein-rich snacks to keep hunger at bay between meals. Burn Boot Camp’s Afterburn Protein Bars, available in delicious flavors like Cookies and Cream and Chocolate Peanut Butter and packed with 17 grams of protein, provide a convenient and tasty way to get a protein boost on the go. Keep them in your gym bag or at your desk for a quick and satisfying snack.

Include Protein in Every Meal: Ensure that each meal contains a good source of protein. This could be lean meats, fish, tofu, or beans. Incorporating protein consistently throughout the day supports muscle maintenance and overall health.

Power Up Post-Workout: Consume protein after your Burn Boot Camp workout to support muscle recovery. Afterburn Protein Powder, available in both whey-based and plant-based options, can be blended into a post-workout smoothie to replenish nutrients and aid in muscle repair.

Meal Prep with Protein: Plan your meals ahead of time and include protein-rich ingredients in your weekly meal prep. Chicken, quinoa, and beans are versatile options that can be incorporated into various dishes, making it easy to reach your daily protein goals.

Hydrate with Protein: Add Afterburn Protein Powder or Collagen to your beverages for an extra protein boost. Whether you prefer a protein-packed smoothie or a protein-infused drink, staying hydrated while meeting your protein needs is a win-win.

Explore Different Protein Sources: Variety is key to a well-rounded diet. Experiment with different protein sources, including both animal and plant-based options. Burn Boot Camp’s commitment to offering both whey-based and plant-based Afterburn Protein Powder ensures there’s an option for every preference.

Read the Labels: When shopping for packaged foods, check labels for their protein content. Burn Boot Camp’s Afterburn Protein Bars are not only delicious, but also provide a convenient way to meet your protein requirements without sacrificing flavor. You’ll also notice our Afterburn Protein Bars have amazing ingredients like collagen, almond butter, and whey protein.

Protein Wrapped Up

As you embark on your fitness journey, remember that protein is a fundamental ally in achieving your health and wellness goals. Whether you’re looking to build lean muscle, support recovery after a Burn Boot Camp workout, or simply maintain a balanced diet, incorporating protein into your daily routine is key.

So, whether you opt for a protein shake, lean meats, or plant-based sources, prioritizing protein after your next Floating Floor or On Demand session is an investment in your body’s recovery and long-term fitness success. You’re not just nourishing your body; you’re fueling your journey towards a stronger, healthier, and more vibrant you. Here’s to embracing the power of protein and unlocking your full potential!

From Finisher to Franchise: The Positive Impact of Community and Leadership https://burnbootcamp.com/from-finisher-to-franchise-the-positive-impact-of-community-and-leadership/ Wed, 10 Jan 2024 14:19:29 +0000 https://burnbootcamp.com/?p=2788273 Fitness journeys are as diverse as the people themselves, and Lindsay’s story stands out as a testament to the transformative power of Burn Boot Camp. From a non-existent fitness routine to becoming a multi-unit Franchise Partner, Lindsay shares the impact that Burn has had in her life since her very first Finisher.

The magic of Burn Boot Camp, according to Lindsay, isn’t just in the physical transformation but in the sense of community that envelops every Member. “Instead of people looking at me like I didn’t fit in, I was getting high fives, and people were telling me I’m amazing and congratulations,” she shares about her early days, highlighting the inclusivity that defines Burn Boot Camp’s unique atmosphere. Eight years later, Lindsay not only owns four Burn Boot Camp locations, but has also co-opened two more with a fellow Franchise Partner, turning a chance encounter into a lifelong sisterhood.

Beyond the workouts, Lindsay discusses the unique culture Burn Boot Camp cultivates. The Trainers, she notes, go beyond the physical, knowing each Member personally and creating an environment where everyone feels seen and supported. “When you walk through our doors, you are immediately family here,” Lindsay affirms. The Burn Boot Camp community extends its impact beyond the gym, contributing to charitable causes and changing lives in each community. Lindsay’s measure of success has evolved, shifting from chasing awards to focusing on the lives changed and the positive influence extended beyond the gym’s four walls.

Watch some of the incredible highlights from Lindsay’s story in the video below. Keep reading to hear about her inspiring transformation and her advice for anyone thinking about taking the first step in owning your own Burn Boot Camp.

What was your fitness routine like before Burn Boot Camp?

It was pretty non-existent. I played softball growing up and once I hit college I completely lost fitness. Then I started having babies and throughout my twenties I really couldn’t find anything that fit or stuck. It was not a priority of mine anymore.

What made you try Burn Boot Camp?

I had my second child and I was 29. I felt that in my twenties I never put me first. I really wanted to find something that I could go into my thirties with on a strong level. So, my friend told me about Burn Boot Camp. I started on a promotion and I went for three weeks. My husband told me I couldn’t join after that and to enjoy my three weeks. Within the first week, he told me whatever the price is, we are going to do this because you are a changed version of yourself just in that first five days. And the rest is history.

What was it that he saw?

I was happier. Even though I was sore and I could barely walk. I was literally crawling up the stairs my first week. But overall I felt better. I didn’t need to take the midday naps. I was a better mom. I was a better wife. I wanted to be more social and he could just see that through me and knew that I needed this in my life.

How has Burn Boot Camp impacted your family?

One way that Burn Boot Camp has really impacted my family is that my kids have gotten to see me take leadership of my own life. When I started Burn, my youngest son was a newborn and my oldest was five and now they are thirteen and eight. On his thirteenth birthday, my son wanted to go work out with me at Burn. It makes me emotional because as a mom, everything I do is for my kids. To see them wanting to do healthy habits just because they’ve watched me do it and to know that I’ve had that impact on their life, I don’t know if there’s anything better than that.

When did you feel like part of the community of Burn?

It was that first day. The first day I show up and everyone’s in their Lulu gear, right? And they’re all incredibly fit and strong and I was so intimidated to first walk in the door. I’m wearing an oversized t-shirt with pants that I’ve had for 10 years and that I usually wore to bed. I didn’t feel like I fit in from my own mindset. At the end of the workout, we were doing a Finisher. Devin was the Trainer, and he said, “Go outside, run four hill sprints, come inside, and you’re done.” Well, by the time I was finishing my second sprint, most everyone had ran inside at that point. I’m a rule follower, so I was just like, all right, well, I have do two more, even if I’m barely crawling up this thing. By the time I finished my fourth, I was walking back in the front door and people were already in their cars driving away. Instead of people looking at me like I didn’t fit in, I was getting high fives, and people were telling me I’m amazing and congratulations, and that they were proud of me for finishing that. I left not feeling like I didn’t fit in. I left feeling like I belonged even though I was in a different place in my journey than these other women.

How long have you been part of Burn Boot Camp?

Eight years. Burn Boot Camp has been a part of my life for eight years. I started as a Member of Burn Boot Camp in March 2015, and by June 2015, I was a Franchise Partner. By December 2015, Burn Boot Camp Elizabeth, my first location, was open and then two years later, so was my second location. Now I own four and I haven’t looked back since.

What made you want to become a Franchise Partner?

I guess my own transformation. When you’re in the gym and you start to do things that you didn’t think that you could ever physically do, it unlocks a different part of your brain that questions what you can do in general outside of this gym that you didn’t think you could do. That empowerment made me want to give this same feeling and mindset to women in Charlotte, men in Charlotte, whatever it was. I wanted everyone to be able to unlock their same potential because we’re all sitting here not realizing what we’re truly made of.

I’m a little crazy. I definitely believe in faith over fear and something was just telling me that this was the right path for me. I’m glad that I listened to the faith and I didn’t listen to the fear. I’m glad that I just kept going one step ahead of the other. I was working in corporate America and I knew that I wasn’t feeling like I was making a difference. I’ve always felt like I was created to make some sort of difference on a level. When this came into my life, I started to feel okay. I thought, “This is it, I think this is what I need to do.” I had to have my parents co-sign on a loan because we really didn’t have the finances to fund it. I called my dad, who is an entrepreneur, and he was just flabbergasted. He was like, “What are you doing? You have no idea that this is even going to work out and you have no money to rely on if it fails.” And I simply said to him, “I’m not going to fail.”

What has life looked like since becoming a Franchise Partner?

It’s been an interesting eight years. I was able to leave corporate America pretty quickly. We thought that by the time we opened location two was when I would leave, but I was able to leave about five months into location number one opening. About a year later, my husband was able to leave his job to help open location number two. We’ve really changed our lives. I wouldn’t say it’s from as much of a financial perspective as it is from how we view life. That’s really what Burn has given us. I’ve been able to live a passion and as long as it can pay the bills, we’ve realized that our lives are so much happier being able to pour into something that’s meaningful and impactful. So now my husband is living his passion. He was in the military for 23 years and really didn’t know where he was going. Him seeing me transform into someone that took life by the horns and really just jumped all into something and taking risks, made him want to do the same exact thing.

How has the Burn community supported your journey as a Franchise Partner?

In 2021, we were coming out of a pandemic. I have a friend who is also a Franchise Partner in Charlotte, and we were on the phone every single day just talking through ideas, seeing what each other was doing, how we were doing. All of a sudden we both had this little light bulb go off where we asked, “Why not combine? Why not do this together?” Because we’re already talking to each other every single day, we’ve been on the same page for everything, and then we can have that support system to really pour into our locations. So, she owns two, I own two, and together we opened two more, so now we just have six locations in Charlotte. It really is a magical thing because when we met, she was also one of the first Franchise Partners. When we first met, we both had no interest in each other and I would say didn’t like each other based off of judgment. We both had just started Burn Boot Camp and I really think that that speaks to what Burn Boot Camp is. It strips you from your judgment of other people. That’s what I love about Burn, is it helped us both evolve as individuals and strip each other down to know who is the person and where are you on your journey. I really started to understand that everyone truly is the same and is good at heart, you just really have to find that person inside. Once we started to do that, we connected on such a level. She’s like my sister, and now we get to do this together.

What is the Burn Boot Camp community like?

The community is unmatched. Everyone that walks in here is really in their own walk of life and has their own journey and wants different things out of the gym. Once you get in here, no one is treated differently. Everyone’s the same. It doesn’t matter if you can do the same exercises or if you can lift heavier weights or lighter weights, or maybe you can’t do any weight at all. The egos are left at the door and so is the judgment. It truly is a beautiful thing that we’re starting to see replicated. Even once you leave the gym.

In this community, you just never know what you’re going to find. There’s something about the high fives and the sweating it out together, and the fact that we also give back to the Charlotte community. I really do feel that what sets Burn Boot Camp apart is it’s not about just coming together and sweating it out for 45 minutes and leaving, but it’s also getting your kids together on play dates. We’ve had Members meet their spouse at Burn Boot Camp. I’ve had multiple friend groups form at Burn Boot Camp. I’ve had people move here from other states feeling like they had nobody, and they were depressed and didn’t know where to go. They came to the gym and now they have a community. We’ve had lives change in the community outside of these four walls because everyone comes together to support the outside. It gives me goosebumps because where else can you find a place that not only brings people together, but then they take that togetherness, and they bring the good outside and raise money and give back to their community. That’s what we do.

What impact does Burn Boot Camp have beyond the workout?

So outside of the 45 minutes of a workout that you can get at Burn, we’re talking to you about what your goals are. It’s not what people think. It’s not how much weight you want to lose. It’s what do you want to get out of this? How strong do you want to be? Do you want to learn how to do a pull up? It’s more about power and really empowering women to be bigger in terms of taking up more space in the world and not trying to slim down to fit a societal mold. That’s what Burn Boot Camp is. You see people in here sweating and you see them getting strong. They’re getting strong because they’re taking that out into the world and they’re being stronger moms and they’re teaching their kids to be stronger kids and they’re inspiring their husbands who are showing up at Camp with them because they’re like, “Yes! I want to be a part of this too.”

What is one of your favorite transformation stories?

I look at transformations as the whole person. I really don’t view transformations as physical anymore. I view them as mental. Those are my favorite stories in how people are taking what they’re doing at Burn and applying it to their lives outside of here. I’ll never forget, there was one Camp that I was training, and I went to do a wall-sit next to a Member to just sit there with her. She turned to me, and she goes, “Hey, I wanted to tell you something real quick. I went to interview for a job.” It was a high-level job. And she goes, “I never would have ever even considered myself capable of even applying for it. Not only did I get the interview, but I got the job. And the fact that one year ago I would’ve seen that job posting and just gone by it. But this time I looked at it and said, yes, I can. I am capable to do this job.” And she said she went in with such confidence and she got that confidence and empowerment at Burn. That’s what it’s about. It’s just that transformation of being able to learn your potential and seeing you break through the barriers in your workout, but it doesn’t stop there. You start to break through the barriers in your life and saying, “What can I do?” instead of saying “What can’t I do?”

It’s definitely so empowering and inspiring to see people not just change their lives, but realize they want to take what Burn Boot Camp does into a different community. Maybe it’s to their hometown or maybe they’re moving across the country to do so. I’ve kind of lost track of how many Franchise Partners have come out of my gyms. I know that it’s at least eight locations across five states. I’m really proud of that because it’s spreading our message and spreading what we stand for into more communities.

What’s something you’re proud of since becoming a Member at Burn Boot Camp?

I participated in Burn Athlete Games two years in a row. It did look a little bit different when I did it, however, it was a big testament to me because I’ve never been very self-disciplined. That’s something I’ve always struggled with. When it comes to really transforming your body and challenging yourself and being strict to your nutrition, that was something that I would always say I can’t do. I changed my mindset and said, “Let’s see if I can do this.” And I did it two years in a row. I’m so incredibly proud of the discipline and commitment that it took in order to do that. By participating in Burn Athlete two years in a row, it really set a foundation for our team. Ever since I did it, it’s been part of our culture in our Burn Boot Camps to challenge yourselves the way that our Members challenge each other every single day to go outside of your comfort zone. I’m always really proud to see our training team take that challenge on every year.

We’ve had six of our Trainers make it to Burn Athlete finals held at Burn Headquarters. Every single time, it is just such an explosive weekend because our community shows up for their Trainers. You will never miss them. They are the loudest in the gym. They have signs, they have shirts, they really pour into our Trainers. It’s such a testament to the way that our Trainers and Burn Trainers in general really pour into our Members day in and day out, 365 days a year.

What sets Burn Boot Camp Trainers apart?

When you walk through our doors, you are immediately family here. You’re going to be known by name, by the Trainer. They are going to know what you’re capable of. At the beginning, they’re going to be really listening to you and pushing you past what you can do, just a little bit to your limitations. But at some point, they’re always going to know how to push you past that limit a little bit further and a little bit further. That really is what makes our Trainers the top 1%. Because you can’t find that, you can’t find someone that knows your name. Knows that your daughter started softball this week and maybe your dog died and they have a little handwritten note for you. And then also get on the floor with you and say, “You used 20 pounds last week, we’re going up to 25’s. You can do that.” It’s just such a special environment to know that you are constantly being challenged and you’re also being protected to ensure that you’re doing the right exercises.

Our Trainers absolutely practice what they preach, but they’re also a part of the community. It’s not practicing what you preach and then doing a different workout. They believe in these workouts. If you take a look at any of our Trainers, they’re so strong. Completely strong. Even though everyone might look a little bit different, they’re strong mentally and they’re strong physically, and they’re going to be sweating it out right next to you in Camp every single day. They’re going through the same type of pain-faces and moments of wanting to take the breaks as you are.

I love that you walk into this gym and you don’t see just the same type of person. I love that you look at the Trainers and you don’t see the same type of person. We are not all the same and we are all not the same size, nor should we ever be. I think that that speaks wonders to the fact that you don’t have to fit a mold to work out here. You just have to show up as who you are. That’s all we ever ask anybody to be.

Do you have a favorite day of Protocol?

I love metabolic conditioning because it makes you feel strong, it makes you feel powerful, and it makes you also feel like maybe you’re dying.

What would you say to someone who might feel intimidated to try Burn Boot Camp?

In general, I struggle with social anxiety, just as a human. That hasn’t changed. However, when I started Burn Boot Camp, I would meet my friend there every single day. I would not walk in that gym without her. She could be running 5 or 10 minutes late and I’d just sit in my car to meet her and walk in. Even after I became a Franchise Partner and still worked out at the same location. Even though I knew every single person in the gym, it was just a weird, social anxiety thing for me. But I walked in, and slowly but surely, I was able to do it by myself. So I understand how intimidating it can be to walk in for the first time. What’s the worst that can happen? I don’t know. Maybe you don’t like the workout. Maybe it isn’t for you. That’s rare. But what’s the best thing that can happen? I’m a testament to it. It can change your life.

What would you say to someone who loves Burn Boot Camp and wants to open their own location?

Why not? Why would you not take that next step? Why would you not? If you fall in love with something, if you have a passion for it, if you feel a calling, why would you not follow that? And, you know, it’s a risk. Any business is a risk, but I truly believe that if it’s something that you believe in and you have faith in what it stands for and what you stand for and you’re authentic in that, then you will be successful.

How do you measure success?

I measure success through impact and how many lives we’re changing and what we’re doing outside of the gyms to change the community and help people in need. My way of measuring it has definitely changed. I used to chase awards. I wanted to be the best. I wanted to win everything. I always wanted to have the top numbers. Going through a pandemic and being taken to a different level changes the way you view success. Once I got down, and I buried myself into the why. Why am I still here? Why am I still doing this? It’s because of the people and it’s because of the reason why I decided to take that first leap to begin with. Because of the empowerment and the transformation in my own mindset. That’s what I want everyone to have. When I was able to start going back to the people and going into their stories and seeing the impact we were having, it didn’t matter anymore. I don’t care if I never win another award. I don’t care if I’m never number one. The people that are in this gym, their lives are being changed. That’s success to me.

If you could go back and tell yourself anything before starting the journey as a Franchise Partner, what would it be?

Prepare for failure. I would tell myself to prepare for failure. I walked into this journey on a very successful note. I believed in faith over fear the entire time. And I never questioned fear. I never questioned anything going wrong. I always said nothing will go wrong because I won’t allow it. I won’t allow myself to fail. But failure is a necessity and failure is real. We need failure to learn and to get better and to grow into better humans, better business people, better owners, better moms, better partners. We need that. I looked at failure as a negative. Quitting is a negative, but failure is a part of life. I wish that I would’ve embraced that from the very beginning, but that’s something that I’ve been able to learn and I am so grateful for that lesson and it’s only made me a better person.

How do you balance it all?

An incredible team. Incredible team. That’s it. It’s the people first, and my team saves me every single day. I have a great partner in doing all of this. We have just over 70 team members, a great executive team, and great leaders inside the gyms. I wouldn’t be able to do any of this without any of them. Having that team that’s empowered to really embrace this journey and embrace what we do here at Burn Boot Camp and truly believe in it, is the only way that I can have work life balance, whatever that looks like.

Reflecting on an Unforgettable Year: Burn Boot Camp’s 2023 Journey  https://burnbootcamp.com/reflecting-on-an-unforgettable-year-burn-boot-camps-2023-journey/ Fri, 29 Dec 2023 11:00:00 +0000 https://burnbootcamp.com/?p=2788185 As we say our goodbyes to another remarkable year at Burn Boot Camp, it’s with pride and gratitude that we look back at the milestones, events, and achievements that made 2023 one for the books. It’s been a year of growth, community, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

Franchise Development Triumphs:

This year saw a return of Discovery Day at Burn Boot Camp Headquarters, welcoming 13 attendees. Their enthusiasm and shared passion for our brand were contagious and made for a special day.

We took our Franchise Showcase on the road, making stops in two states with open territories. There were opportunities to connect, share our vision, and witness the Burn Boot Camp spirit.

We marked the opening of our 391st location, with six more slated to open their doors in January. This achievement brought our total awarded territories to 555.

A highlight of the year was our Record-Breaking Fire Club trip to Aruba, where 44 of our Franchise Partners and their teams enjoyed a well-deserved getaway and celebration.

Burn Boot Camp returned to the Franchise Times 400 list with an even better ranking of #276, as well as made the INC. 5,000 list for the fifth straight year, a testament to your support, our continued growth and influence in the fitness industry.

Unforgettable Events:

We made history with our first-ever Member Summit in Charlotte, NC, bringing together over 300 attendees to share life-changing transformation stories, sweat together in the best Camps, and celebrate our incredible community.

700+ cheered on their athlete at one of the year’s most exciting events, Athlete Games, the largest audience to date at Burn Boot Camp Lake Norman.

Denver, Colorado, hosted another monumental event – our annual Summit, where 700 Franchise Partners, Operations Managers, Trainers and other key team members came together to learn, network, and, most importantly, celebrate!

Heartfelt Philanthropy:

Our community’s generosity was on full display as we raised over $648,000 nationwide to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. It’s incredible what Burn Nation can do when we come together for a cause.

Company Achievements:

In October, we launched our brand-new App with Burn On Demand, bringing the Burn Boot Camp experience directly to our Members wherever they are.

Devan and Morgan Kline proudly introduced their second book BURN: The Burn Boot Camp 5-Step Strategy for Inner and Outer Strength, now available for pre-order, offering insights and inspiration to our ever-growing community.

We promoted Amber Burke to Chief Operating Officer, marking a new chapter of leadership and growth.

Our first-ever Brand Campaign made waves on streaming platforms, showcasing the core of who we are and why we’re disrupting the fitness industry.

In 2023, Burn Nation officially became 115,000+ Members strong, reaffirming that we have the best fitness community in the world.

Exciting New Products:

This year saw the launch of two exciting new products – Creatine and Collagen – providing Burn Nation with additional tools to make even more progress in their fitness journey.

We leveled up our Afterburn lineup with two new, delicious seasonal Afterburn flavors, Pina Colada and Pumpkin Spice.

With so much gratitude for the past year, we set intentions for the new year. Armed with the knowledge of everything we’ve accomplished together in 2023, let’s set meaningful goals and crush 2024.

Cheers, Burn Nation!

Burn Nation Unites for a Cause: The 2023 Be Their Hero Campaign Raises over $86,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society® (LLS)  https://burnbootcamp.com/burn-nation-unites-for-a-cause-the-2023-be-their-hero-campaign-raises-over-86000-for-the-leukemia-lymphoma-society-lls/ Fri, 15 Dec 2023 14:00:00 +0000 https://burnbootcamp.com/?p=2788117 In a powerful display of community spirit and unwavering generosity, Burn Nation has once again proven that when it comes to making a difference, no challenge is too great. Together, Burn Nation collectively raised over $86,000 during the Be Their Hero fundraising campaign to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society® (LLS). Let’s delve into the heartwarming details of this incredible initiative and celebrate the collective impact of Burn Nation.

The funds raised during the campaign will contribute significantly to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s mission. Every dollar is a beacon of hope for those affected by blood cancer, helping to fund critical research, provide education, support patients and their families, and advocate for improved healthcare solutions. Your contributions are a shining light in the fight against the darkness of cancer, making a tangible difference in the lives of those who need it most.

During our Giving Tuesday Camp at Burn Boot Camp Lake Norman, Lauren Palmer, mom to two-time AML survivor, Jennings, shared, “My son is a two-time cancer survivor. He was diagnosed when he was two years old and he’s eight now. He’s had a lot of treatment. But the reason he is alive today is because people like you come together and give to organizations as powerful as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.”

You can read more about Lauren and Jennings’ story in their featured blog post.

On behalf of Burn Boot Camp Headquarters, we would like to extend a sincere thank you to all those who helped contribute to this cause. As we celebrate the collective achievement, let’s acknowledge all the teams and locations that went above and beyond in their fundraising efforts!

Together, Burn Nation has made a lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals and families affected by these challenging illnesses. The success of the 2023 Be Their Hero campaign is not just measured in dollars but in the lives touched and the hope restored. As we reflect on this remarkable achievement, let us carry the momentum forward, continuing to be heroes in the lives of those who need it most. If you did not have the opportunity to participate, you can still donate and make a difference through the end of the year.

Thank You for Being Their Hero!
